Reviews Custom Questions: Overview and Setup Guide

Custom questions help you collect more useful product feedback than a star rating alone.

Ask shoppers about details such as fit, comfort, quality, or intended use, then display those answers on your storefront or let future shoppers filter reviews by them.

For merchants, this makes reviews more informative and easier to analyze. For customers, it helps them find feedback from shoppers with similar needs and make more confident purchase decisions.

How custom questions work

Froonze lets you create custom questions in two ways:

  • Choose from more than 25 pre-made questions organized by seven store types.
  • Start from scratch and create your own questions using five question types.

You can also:

  • Mark questions as required.
  • Allow shoppers to filter reviews by an answer.
  • Show question answers on the storefront.
  • Use numerical answers to calculate averages where supported.

Free-text questions cannot be used as review filters or averaged.

Add custom questions

  1. In Shopify admin, open Apps and select Froonze.
  2. Go to the Reviews side tab and open the Advanced dropdown.
  3. Select the Custom questions option.

  1. Click the Add question button in the top-right corner.
  2. Choose Select a pre-made question or Start from scratch.
  3. Configure the question and its display options.
  4. Save the question.

Your question will then be included in the review form according to the settings you selected.

Option 1: Use a pre-made question

Pre-made questions are ready-to-use questions grouped by store type:

  • Any store
  • Clothing
  • Shoes
  • Beauty and personal care
  • Home and furniture
  • Electronics
  • Food and pets

To use one:

  1. Click Add question.
  2. Browse the available store types.
  3. Select the category that best matches your products.
  4. Choose a question from the list.
  5. Review the question settings.
  6. Decide whether the question should be required.
  7. Choose whether shoppers can filter reviews by the question.
  8. Choose whether answers should appear on the storefront.
  9. Save the question.

Pre-made questions are a good option when you want to set up review forms quickly or need inspiration for your own questions.

Option 2: Start from scratch

Choose Start from scratch when you need questions tailored to your products, brand, or customers. Froonze supports five question types.

Single select

Shoppers choose one answer from a predefined list. Use this when only one answer should apply, such as:

  • How does the product fit?
  • What is your skin type?
  • How difficult was the setup?

Multi select

Shoppers can choose multiple answers. Use this when several answers may apply, such as:

  • Which features do you use?
  • What do you like most about the product?
  • Where do you use this product?

Scale 1–5

Shoppers select a numerical score from 1 to 5. Use this to measure areas such as:

  • Product quality
  • Comfort
  • Effectiveness
  • Value for money

Scale questions can be averaged, making them useful for showing summary scores.

Centered scale

A centered scale lets shoppers rate an aspect around a central point, such as from negative to positive. This works well for questions such as:

  • How does the product fit?
  • How is the product's value?
  • How closely does the product match your expectations?

Free text

Shoppers enter their own written answer. Use free text when you want more detailed feedback, for example:

  • What should future shoppers know?
  • What could we improve?
  • How do you use this product?

Free-text answers cannot be filtered or averaged.

Configure question settings

After selecting or creating a question, review the available settings.

Make a question required

Enable the required option when every reviewer should answer the question.

Required questions are useful for important product information, but avoid making too many questions mandatory. A shorter review form is more likely to be completed.

Good candidates for required questions include:

  • Fit for clothing and shoes
  • Skin type for beauty products
  • Product quality
  • Overall recommendation

Allow shoppers to filter reviews

Enable the filter option when you want shoppers to filter reviews using the answers to that question.

This is most useful for structured questions such as:

  • Fit
  • Skin type
  • Intended use
  • Product type
  • Comfort level
  • Setup difficulty

For example, a shopper looking for a jacket can filter reviews based on answers such as Runs small, True to size, or Runs large.

Free-text questions cannot be used as filters.

Show answers on the storefront

Enable the storefront display option when you want the answers to appear alongside reviews on your product pages.

Showing answers helps shoppers understand the review in context. For example, a review about a pair of shoes becomes more useful when shoppers can also see the reviewer's comfort rating or fit selection.

Choosing the right question type

Use the question type that matches the answer you need:

Goal

Recommended question type

Choose one category

Single select

Select multiple applicable options

Multi select

Measure a score from 1 to 5

Scale 1-5

Capture a rating around a midpoint

Centered scale

Collect detailed written feedback

Free text

Use single-select, multi-select, and scale questions when you want structured data that can be filtered, displayed, or averaged. Use free text when the main goal is to collect context, opinions, or suggestions.

Three simple question combinations

Example 1: Clothing store

For clothing, combine questions that help shoppers understand sizing and comfort:

  1. How does the item fit? Answers: Runs small, True to size, Runs large.
  2. How would you rate the comfort? Type: Scale 1–5.
  3. What is your usual size? Type: Single select or free text.

Allow filtering by the fit question and show the answers on the storefront. This helps shoppers compare reviews from customers with similar sizing needs.

Example 2: Beauty and personal care store

For skincare or beauty products, focus on skin type and product performance:

  1. What is your skin type? Answers: Dry, Oily, Combination, Sensitive, Normal.
  2. How effective was the product? Type: Scale 1–5.
  3. How long have you used the product? Type: Single select.

Allow shoppers to filter by skin type and show the effectiveness average when enough reviews have been collected.

Example 3: Electronics store

For electronics, ask about setup, performance, and use:

  1. How easy was the product to set up? Type: Scale 1–5.
  2. Which features do you use? Type: Multi select.
  3. What should future shoppers know before buying? Type: Free text.

Show the answers on the storefront. Use the setup score for an average and the feature question to help shoppers find reviews from customers with similar use cases.

Best practices for custom questions

  • Start with two or three relevant questions rather than asking too many at once.
  • Use pre-made questions to get started quickly.
  • Choose questions that match the product category.
  • Make only the most important questions required.
  • Use structured questions for filtering and averages.
  • Use free text for detailed feedback and customer suggestions.
  • Show answers on the storefront when they add useful context to the review.
  • Keep question wording short and easy to understand.
  • Avoid asking for information that does not help shoppers make a purchase decision.
